Hosting the Moto GP in 2021 is truly a blessing for Lombok. The Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing ensures that it will build a bypass road from Lombok International Airport (LIA) to the special economic area of Mandalika. In contrast to other public facilities projects, all development funds, including land acquisition, will be borne by the central government.

This was confirmed after West Nusa Tenggara Governor Zulkieflimansyah (Zul) held a meeting with the Minister of Public Works and Public Housing, Basuki Hadimuldjono, at the office of the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing, in Jakarta, March 26, 2019. Abdulbar M Mansoer. While accompanying the Governor, Head of Bappeda Ridwan Syah.

“The Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing immediately prepares and completes road access from LIA to Mandalika,” Governor Zul said.
Budget is ready. This year there has been IDR 500 billion (USD 36 million). The 17 km road will later facilitate access from the airport to Mandalika. Where currently the existing access is considered too narrow. So that the road is very much needed.

“It is targeted to finish before Moto GP 2021,” said the Governor.

The construction of the airport bypass to Mandalika is one of the direct instructions of President Joko Widodo to support the 2021 MotoGP event in Mandalika. Next to that is the port and the extension of the airport runway.
After discussing with the Minister of Public Works and Public Housing and the Director of ITDC in Jakarta, the Governor was very optimistic that the development could be completed soon. Because, where there is a will there is a way.

“God willing, the central government will act quickly and resolve it immediately,” he said.

Head of the West Nusa Tenggara Regional Development Planning and Research Agency H Ridwan Syah said the government’s readiness to build infrastructure following the MotoGP 2021 event was the right moment for West Nusa Tenggara to improve.

Opportunity does not come twice. Infrastructure improvements such as bypasses, runway extensions, and port arrangement promised by President Joko Widodo must be utilized.

The extension of the runway has been fussed since the days of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, only now can it be realized. “Now is the time to be fulfilled by Angkasa Pura corp.. Because, this is a must, “he said.

The MotoGP event requires proper airport support to transport logistics and various items that they must use in the race.

“Hundreds of thousands of people will come and logistics will be sent through the air,” he said.

They need a wide-bodied aircraft like a Boeing 747 or Jumbo Jet. The new wide-body aircraft can come down if the runway length reaches 3,000 meters. Now the new runway length is only 2,750 meters.

Improvements in port access is also on the plan. It will become alternative for people to come to Lombok. The pier at Padangbai Port (Bali) and Lembar (Lombok) must be balanced in capacity. At present Lembar has three piers, while Padangbai has only two.

Regarding the issue of the LIA-Mandalika bypass road, the local government does not have funds for land acquisition because its budget has already been absorbed for handling the earthquake. Ministry of Public Works and Housing has agreed to bear the costs of land acquisition and road construction.
